[Reading Advantage encourages parents to keep a reading journal for 30 days. This teen mom shared hers with us.]

Day 1:
Dylan and I visited the library and checked out 3 books. Happy Baby, Itchy Itchy Chicken Pox, and Winnie the Pooh and Some Bees.

Day 2:
I read Eats to Dylan. At first he wasn't interested until I got him to calm down. Once he was relaxed I began to read to him. He watched and listened as I read and pointed to the animals. He seemed to like all the colors.

Day 3:
I read Happy Baby to Dylan. He picked the book out this time. He sat down in my lap and got ready for me to read.
He laughed and giggled when I made the different voices of each character.
[Ed Note: Emphasis added. Some parents make the extra effort.]

Day 4:
I read Winnie the Pooh and Some Bees to Dylan. I knew he would want me to read to him because I'd just got through bathing him. He was relaxed. As I read he pointed to all the bees wondering what they were. He began to fall asleep as I read and rocked him to sleep.

Day 5:
I read Itchy Itchy Chicken Pox to Dylan. This time he wasn't interested in me reading to him. He slapped the book out of my hand so I had to calm him down. I gave him crackers to snack on while I read to him and he sat there and listened.

Day 6:
Today I read Happy Birthday to You to Dylan. He really liked that book and enjoyed listening to me read because it was a Dr. Seuss book.

Day 7:
Today Very Hungry Caterpillar is the book Dylan picked out. He sat in my lap and point to anything that seemed of interest to him. He didn't want me to stop once I finished so I read it again.

Day 8:
Today I read Who's in the Zoo? to Dylan. This time he acted like he was going to read. He had the book in his hand, opened it and began to babble. After I let him carry on and finish I began to read to him. He's really enjoying me reading to him.

Day 9:
Sweet Dream Kisses. This book is an bedtime story. So I bathed him first. After we were all done I laid him down and began reading. Although he didn't go to sleep right away.

Day 10:
Tonight Dylan picked out the book. The Jellybean Principal. This book has a lot colors and interesting people and objects so right away he was engaged. He sat the very calm and patiently as I read to him.

Day 11:
This night I did not read to Dylan because it was Halloween night and I was extremely tired and aching from taking kids trick or treating.

Day 12:
Tonight I read Little Critter at Scout Camp. At first Dylan wasn't interested because he's been having a cold the past few days so I pumped his nose, gave his medicine and took him a bath. By then he was calm and ready for me to read. He fell asleep halfway through the book.

Day 13:
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was the book I read tonight he kinda laughed as I read. The rhythm may have seemed very catchy to him. He whined a little after I finished. So I read it once more.

Day 14:
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? Another catchy book with rhythm to it. Halfway through the book he got a little fidgety. I could tell he wasn't in the mood for me to read.

Day 15:
Tonight I read Go Dog Go. Dylan was already very tired and ready to sleep. So I layed him down and sat beside him. I was only on the 5th page when I noticed him falling asleep. I continued to read and by the time I was finished he was out for the count.

Day 16:
Tonight I read Goodbye House to Dylan. A very colorful book. He loves colorful books. As I read he points to things in the book and I tell him what they are.

Day 17:
Animal Homes is the book Dylan picked tonight. That was funny because as soon as I began to read he starts squirming around. This night I did not read he was very cranky.

Day 18:
Tonight I read Building House. He sat quietly and patiently for me to begin to read. He was very sleepy so I knew he would fall asleep while reading.

Day 19:
Tonight I read Livingstone House. This book was a book for older children so I pretend to read the book and made up a story of my own. He points and look at me so I could tell him whatever he's pointing at what it is.

Day 20:
Tonight I read First Words to Dylan. Right away he was interested because of all the colors and pictures in the book. As I read he tried reading himself. That was cute.

Day 21:
I read Happy Baby again to Dylan. He always seems to love this book. Again he took the book out of my hands trying to read it himself. After I was all done he began to fall asleep.

Day 22:
Tonight I read Eats to Dylan. He was very grumpy all day so I didn't think he would sit and let me read. So I gave him something to eat on and his cup and he sat there and let me read.

Day 23:
Tonight I read Very Hungry Caterpillar once again. He tried reading to me this time. I let him read and I read and pointed to the pictures telling him what they are. He liked that book.

Day 24:
Tonight I read Itchy Itchy Chicken Pox to Dylan. In this book there's a boy with chicken pox all over his body. He pointed to the chicken pox like he wondered what they were. I think this is one of his favorite books.

Day 25:
Tonight Dylan picked out the book Who's in the Zoo. I read to him what kind of animals were in the book. He pointed to the big elephant as I read. So I thought that may have been of interest to him.

Day 26:
Tonight I read Eats to Dylan. He liked this book because it is very colorful and has lots of big images.

Day 27:
Tonight I read Winnie the Pooh and Some Bees to Dylan. He was already very sleepy so I laid him down tucked him in and read to him. He began to fall asleep halfway through the book.

Day 28:
Tonight Dylan and I read The Tiny Seed. . He liked this because of all the colors and little people we saw in the book. This was a long book so I had to break down to where I think he understands.

Day 29:
Today I read Butterflies. As I read he tried to read along. We pointed out all the different butterflies and caterpillars.

Day 30:
Tonight I read Growing Frogs to Dylan. He got to see big frogs, little frogs, ducks, and tadpoles. He seems very interested in this book.

Day 31:
Today I read Nemo to Dylan. This time he sat there and his eyes wondered around the room. He didn't seem as interested as the night before.

Day 32:
Today I read Dory to Dylan. This book is very similar to Nemo. Same characters different story. He seem to be interested in fish. When I tried turning the page he would turn it back to the page with all the fish and he'd go "ooooooooo."

Day 33:
Tonight I read Finn to Dylan. This book is similar to Nemo and Dory. He always tries to read and point along with me. I enjoy reading to him.

[When we last heard, this teen mom was still reading to Dylan.]
