Literacy is one of the best predictors of a child's future success. But
for a child growing up in poverty books are scarce. A child without access
to books won't have the chance to become an engaged and capable reader. A
child who is familiar with and enjoys books before starting school is more
likely to exhibit higher language development and reading comprehension.
"Only 16% of low income students become proficient readers." 1
